Was Transylvania, at any point in history, ever an independent country, kingdom, or the like?

I know that it was a part of the Austro-Hungary lands, and is now a part of Romania. But what I want to know is, was it ever an independent nation, kingdom, empire, or anything of the like? Or, if not Transylvania as it is now known, was there ever an independent nation or such in the area it composes of?
